Flamenco is a musical and dance art form from the southern part of Spain called Andalusia. Throughout the ages a number of different cultures like the Phoenicians, Greeks, gypsies, etc. left their mark on this art form. Musically there are different rhythms i.e. the buleria, alegrias, etc. that the guitarist, singer and dancer use as their bases to study, create and perform. And when they get together there is an interaction between them that culminates in an artistry that can reach your inner soul. The jota Aragonese is a folk or regional art form from the northeast region of Spain known as Aragon. This art form includes dances as well as solo singers and instrumental groups. The groups called rondallas use several string instruments i.e. the guitar, bandurria, el guitarrico to give the jota a distinct musical sound. The dancers wear "alpagartas" a special sandal that has a roped sole. The dance can be energetic with high kicks or it could be more sedate with lots of formations. Spanish classical dance is the incorporation of 18th century ballet with the popular dances like the bolero and fandango danced by both the court society and the general population including the gypsies of that same period. Combining these dances the technique of arms, footwork, steps and castanets developed. Later dances were choreographed to classical music composed by internationally known composers like Falla, Albeniz, Granados, and Turina. In the Spanish classical dance the same shoes that are worn for flamenco are used. |
